The Human Body and CBD (Cannabidiol)

The human body produces a substance known as endo-genus cannabinoid. The human body also has receptors designed specifically to recognize and respond to the endo-genus cannabinoid. Together the endo-genus cannabinoid and the receptors that bind with them, form the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is responsible for several functions within the human body, specifically to maintaining homeostasis.  EC receptors operate as a communications network between cells which aim is to create a balanced internal environment. Endocannabinoid receptors are found within the entire body but are highly concentrated in the brain (CB1 receptor), central nervous system and the immune system (CB2 receptor).    Our bodies are constantly working to counteract internal and external stressors and a perfect balance is rarely achieved.  CBD works sort of like a key and a lock. CBD influences our EC System by triggering EC receptor activity.  The receptor is a lock and CBD is the key. CBD indirectly stimulates CB1 & CB2 receptors while they are locked onto a molecule, in turn helping to maintain the homeostasis.  Maintaining homeostasis in our bodies helps regulate our nervous system, endocrine system and lymphatic system.  This is how CBD can help with so many different ailments.

Hemp-CBD (Cannabidiol)

Cannabis is a complex plant with over 400 chemical entities and more than 60 cannabinoid compounds. The Cannabis plant is one of the oldest domesticated crops.  Hemp has been grown for over 5,000 years for it’s fiber, textiles, ropes, twine, fabric and paper use. From 1840 to 1900, cannabis made up half of all medications sold.  There are many different varieties of cannabis plants.  Hemp (Sativa strains) refers to the non-psychoactive varieties of cannabis sativa with little to no THC.  Marijuana (Indica strains) refers to the varieties that have a high amount of THC production and have a psycho-active effect.  Both hemp and marijuana come from the same cannabis species but are genetically distinct from one another. Hemp contains less than 0.3% of THC.  Marijuana can contain upwards of 20% THC.  Hemp contains a high amount of CBD (cannabidiol) that acts as THC’s antagonist.  CBD has been found to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety effects.   CBD Is a compound that has significant medical benefits. It has options for relieving inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms and other conditions with no feelings of lethargy or dysphoria.

The Brain and CBD

Our brain contains a large number of cells, called neurons, which connect and communicate to many others through synapses by releasing messengers.  Like an electrical socket fits a plug, a neuron’s ability to connect depends on whether or not it contains a receptor. If a neuron contains a receptor that matches, then it can respond directly to the transmitter, otherwise, it generally cannot. Our brain is sensitive and receptive to neurotransmitters produced naturally within the brain and those chemically outside the body, like plants.  CBD interacts with a wide variety of receptors and chemicals within the brain and body. This interaction creates changes in the activity of the neurotransmitters, hormones and other cells throughout the brain. Studies have shown that CBD may play a role in the development of new brain cells.

Anxiety – is a critical adaptive response to help us cope with threats to our safety. When we don’t manage these responses effectively they can lead to clinically diagnosable disorders.  Big Pharma has developed numerous drugs to treat anxiety disorders from Prozac and Zoloft (which inhibit absorption of serotonin in the brain, but increases serotonin in synapses signaling the brain to transmit more serotonin)  to Valium and Xanax. While these drugs can be effective, some people do not respond favorably and can become addicted. Many studies have shown that CBD has powerful anti-anxiety properties for panic disorder, OCD, Social phobias, PTSD and mild to moderate depression. CBD boosts and enhances signaling through serotonin receptors and affects serotonin faster.

Depression – The hippocampus is a major brain area and plays a critical role in a variety of brain functions.  Brain scans from those suffering from depression show a smaller hippocampus. Studies have shown that repeated administration of CBD may help the hippocampus regenerate neurons. This is significant because research shows that severally impaired neuronal plasticity influences suicidal behavior.

Pain Management – Research has shown that CBD influence’s the body to use it’s own ECS effectively.  CBD has anti-inflammatory effects and interacts with neurotransmitters systems to reduce inflammation.  (It’s worthy to note here that THC has been shown to produce a 30% to 40% reduction in Fibromyalgia and Migraines.  CBD and THC has also been shown to prevent the development of tolerances to and withdrawal from opioids.  CBD displays antioxidant activity greater than Vitamin C or Vitamin E.  Studies in mice showed CBD had the ability to inhibit arthritis. CBD helps regulate nerves in the nervous system and helps calm the nervous system thus easing pain, anxiety, fear, stress, panic attacks and PTSD Symptoms.

Insomnia and Sleep Disorders – Sleep is crucial for health, longevity, healing and restoration of the body. CBD has the ability to reduce anxiety and stress which are a one of the most prevalent cause for insomnia. Relaxing the body and mind.

Headaches and Migraines – There isn’t one specific thing that causes headaches. There are dozens of different ways that can produce the effects of a headache. Interestingly, Our brains cannot feel pain, so what is a headache? Some doctors believe it’s the inflammation of tissues and blood vessels in the cranial region and changes in the release of neurochemicals that stimulate nerves and produce pain signals.  Thus, it’s not your brain that is hurting, it’s the network of blood vessels and fragile tissue. Most over the counter meds work by blocking the production of prostaglandins which are inflammation producing substances produced by the body that are released during illness or injury. OTC also block protective prostaglandins that play a role in protecting the kidney.  Using CBD will interact with our natural receptors in the ECS to help promote equilibrium in the brain, by reverting neurochemicals release back to appropriate levels, and reduce the inflammation in the brain tissue.

 

PTSD – When someone experiences a shocking, scary or devastating event they can suffer from PTSD. A major symptom of PTSD is difficulty sleeping because the person becomes hyper aroused, using high brain activity, as is woken up repeatedly throughout their sleep cycle.  The body secretes a chemical called Anandamide (Sanskrit word for Bliss) when we experience stress. It basically puts your body in a temporary state of bliss to help you work through the stress.  Those who suffer from PTSD have much lower levels of Anandamide, rendering them unable to cope with their stress.  CBD activates the bodies natural production of Anandamide and help them cope.
